Why should I sign up for the Win-Win Vote Strategy?
If you are a safe state (e.g. California) voter and you want Joe Biden to win, your vote in California is extremely unlikely to make the difference. In 2020 in California, Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by over 5 million votes! So if you are voting because you want Joe Biden to win, this strategy will allow you to help have a more meaningful impact in a swing state. In 2020 in Arizona, Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by under 11,000 votes! If you are a swing state (e.g. Arizona or Nevada) voter and you prefer a third-party candidate - AND you also prefer Biden over Trump - this strategy allows you to notch a vote for your preferred candidate, AND also avoid the worst-case scenario of a Trump victory. By participating in this strategy, you are increasing the chances that your preferred candidate will reach the 5 percent national threshold to receive tens of millions of dollars in federal funding in the 2028 election, thereby helping to build a sustainable movement.
What is the Win-Win Vote Strategy?
The Win-Win Vote Strategy allows voters from safe states and swing states to use their votes more effectively. A voter from a safe state like California who wants Joe Biden to win agrees to a strategy where that voter voluntarily decides to vote for a third-party candidate (Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Chase Oliver, Jill Stein, or Cornel West) with the understanding that a voter from a swing state like Arizona or Nevada who prefers a third-party candidate agrees to a strategy where that voter voluntarily decides to vote for Joe Biden. The safe state (e.g. California) voter registers their interest using a form on this platform and provides very basic information like their email address and phone number. We will follow up by connecting a safe state voter with a swing state voter via email and/or a platform of their choice (Facebook, LinkedIn, X). We will encourage the safe state voter and swing state voter to communicate and build trust with each other. In mid-October, we will provide a reminder and make sure that both parties still plan to pursue the Win-Win Voter Strategy. If one party drops out, we will make every effort to find a replacement.
Is the Win-Win Vote Strategy unethical?
We believe the Win-Win Vote Strategy is ethical. If you agree that Donald Trump represents an extreme threat to our democracy, it is morally justified to use your vote and encourage other voters to vote against him. We believe it is ethical to seek to use your vote in the best way to avoid a potential dictatorship. The Electoral College is not inherently ethical, and does not advance the principle of one-person, one vote. The Electoral College empowers voters in a limited number of states and significantly diminishes the impact of voters in the overwhelming majority of states. The Win-Win Strategy is only possible because of the disparities created by the Electoral College. Why should a vote in Nevada matter more than a vote in California? Under the Win-Win Vote Strategy, swing state voters get to record their preference for their #1 choice, and they also help to avoid their worst-case outcome. This is the same principle as ranked-choice voting, which many believe is a fairer electoral system. If you believe that voters should have more choices in the long-term, this strategy increases the chances that additional parties - like the Green Party or Libertarian Party - will be on the ballot in future elections, providing voters with more choices to express their political preferences. We believe it is completely ethical for a husband and a wife to agree that they will stay home if the husband plans to vote for a Republican and the wife agrees to vote for a Democrat. The same principle applies.
Who can participate?
We are piloting the Win-Win Voter Strategy in a limited number of counties and states to ensure that the system works, correct any flaws, and make sure participants are happy. We are starting with the following counties. If you do not live in any of these counties, you can NOT yet participate on this platform. If you are not registered to vote in any of these counties, you can NOT yet participate on this platform. If you do not reside in any of these counties, feel free to sign up for our mailing list and we will let you know if we expand into your state and/or county. Arizona: Coconino, Maricopa, and Pima California: Alameda, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, and Ventura Nevada: Clark More to come!
Why should I trust the person who I match with?
We offer a variety of ways for you to build trust with the person you are matched with. This includes connecting you and providing limited contact information so you can learn about the person you are matched with. They can share where they live, why they support the candidate they support, whether they have pets. We will check in a couple weeks before the election and make sure both parties still plan to follow through with the Win-Win Vote Strategy. If one side is having doubts, we will make every effort to match you with a new partner. We would argue that both sides have an incentive to follow through with their commitment. A safe-state Biden voter gains almost nothing from voting for Biden in a state that Biden is going to win by 5 million votes anyway. A swing-state third-party voter who has signed up for this strategy has already indicated they do not want Trump to win the election. But we acknowledge there is no way to guarantee that the other side will comply. We would argue that even if you are not 100% sure that the other side will comply, it is still worth it to participate in the Win-Win Voter Strategy. If you are a safe-state voter (e.g. California), your vote is almost meaningless if you choose to vote for Biden. If you are a safe state voter and you participate in the Win-Win Voter Strategy, and there is only a 70% chance that the swing-state voter is telling the trust, your vote now has 0.7 impact rather than a 0.00001 impact. If you are a swing-state voter, rather than a zero percent chance that you will help to prevent Trump from winning, your vote now has a 100% chance that you will help to prevent Trump from winning. You will also have a 70% chance of a vote for your preferred candidate in a safe state! Win-Win!
